The Joy Formidable
The Joy Formidable brings its blissful rumpus to The Independent on Monday and Tuesday, March 12 and 13, joined by New York's psych-addled, distortion-saturated A Place to Bury Strangers. 8 p.m., $20.
Welsh trio The Joy Formidable is the gastropub of '90s-flavored indie rock, serving up familiar, meaty fare elevated by craft and a smattering of inventive elements. Stomping on a plethora of effects pedals, the band peppers the soft-loud-soft dynamics of the Pixies with the overdriven melodic arcs of the Smashing Pumpkins, slathered in the squall of Ride. Living up to the title of its 2011 full-length, The Big Roar, The Joy Formidable careens through breathy, high-gain guitar pop that's rather like comfort food to anyone nostalgic for the Clinton years.
