Few choreographers have stood downtown and not dreamed of staging the morning commute -- all that hustle and bustle, all those people slipping around one another, all that solo rhythm within the larger movement, all that to-go coffee. And don’t forget the damn bikes! KT Nelson did not forget the damn bikes. For her commute-themed piece Transit, part of ODC/Dance Downtown, she did not simply park a few old Schwinns as props and leave it at that. She called Max Chen, one of the Bay Area’s leading bicycle artists, who regularly does unspeakable things to bicycle frames as a teacher at the Crucible. He fashioned a BMX bike that doubles as a park bench, and one that’s also a table. Modern dance mixed with top-shelf local machine-shop metalwork. ODC/Dance Downtown also features Breathing Underwater, in which choreographer Brenda Way calls on another local prize, the avant-garde cellist Zoe Keating, who samples herself as she plays, creating a cello orchestra, piece by haunting piece. The unique pairings continue with another Nelson work, Cut Out Guy, in which the emotional music of Iceland’s dark-ambient wizard Ben Frost propels five male dancers.
