Like electro-house's redlining sawtooth synths in '05 and '06, and T-Pain's Auto-Tuned vocals in '07 and '08, dubstep's swollen bass wobble has become the inescapable sound of the moment, found on label-commissioned remixes and TV commercials alike. Popular on both indie blogs and mainstream channels thanks to artists like Skrillex, the aggressive "brostep" of today has its origins in a far more reverberant, syncopated sound from South and East London — and Skream and Benga are two of the scene's originals. Drawing on double-time UK bass forms from every grimy angle, the pair plays tracks rinsed in the classic dark, thunderous rhythm, as well as new styles verging on happy hardcore and chipmunk-voiced ridiculousness.
