There's plenty of interest in American roots music these days, and Carolina Chocolate Drops are the scene's wildly popular black sheep. One of only a handful of African-American groups reviving old-time string-band songs, the Chocolate Drops stomp and jive and pick up a storm on Leaving Eden, the combo's first album with new banjoist/guitarist Hubby Jenkins. The recording features the down-home strings, vocals, and found percussion (jug, bones) that fans have grown to love on classic tunes like Etta Baker's "West End Blues," Ethel Waters' "No Man's Mama," and "Read 'em John," a traditional ring-shout from the Georgia Sea Islands. But contributions from cellist Leyla McCalla give the new Buddy Miller-produced record a bolder, more contemporary feel.
