Hanni El Khatib takes great interest in violence and carnage. On his Facebook page, the S.F.-bred, L.A.-based specialist in R&B and garage rock points to "knife fights and train wrecks" as influences. Over on his own site, he dedicates his music to "anyone who's ever been shot or hit by a train." One of Khatib's most popular tracks on YouTube is "You Rascal You," a much-covered, decades-old gem that finds its narrator making devilish death threats toward a man who's been running around with his wife. (Khatib's coup de grâce: "I'll be standing on a corner, full of gin/ When they bring your dead body in.") In keeping with this theme, the rocker's debut album is called Will the Guns Come Out, and the songs on it sound as threatening as the title implies.
