Proposition 8 not only restricted the definition of marriage in California, for queer people of color, it pitted beloved communities against each other and turned cultural norms and identity into political weapons. The solemnity and celebration of marriage vows have become election-year pandering or fodder for presidential endorsement — depending on which side of the aisle you sit (the bride is on the left). Thus, same-sex marriage has become the civil rights cause of a new generation. Embracing this opportunity is the Queer Women of Color Film Festival, a weekend-long set of events dedicated to this social justice issue. It showcases 39 short films focused on same-sex marriage and all the messy stuff in between (love, lust, friendship, family). Now in its eighth year, the film festival has taken on a much grander role by moving into its largest venue yet and adding discussions and receptions alongside the ambitious cinematic works, aiming to reflect the challenges of our time and build community around those experiences through art, activism, and discussion.
