Black Breath might not be doing anything new with metal, but that hasn't stopped the Seattle band from writing and playing with zest and zeal. Formed in 2005, this five-piece cranks out hardcore-punk-tinged thrash that prefers to move fast, then faster and faster until it feels like the whole operation is gonna blow. Usually, the group's recordings come with a dab of polish (esteemed producer/Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou oversaw the new Sentenced to Life), but there's never enough shine to completely cover all of the raw tenacity on hand. Black Breath's gloomy, disaster-heavy lyrical content and creepy album art aren't anything inventive either, but the whole package is delivered with enough genuine giddiness that we're willing to forgive the clichés.
