The Warped Tour launched in 1995 as the skate-punk counterpart to Lollapalooza's increasingly commercialized "alternative" acts. Seventeen years later, it's the premiere summer showcase for Hot Topic fashion and MySpace relevancy. This annual cattle yard of suburban rebellion features dozens of fragment-named pop-punk post-metal bands looking to boost their forum registrations (Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low, Pierce the Veil, Of Mice and Men, etc.), along with some occasional curveballs. For example, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Stepdad is an 8-bit indie-pop quartet that sounds like it was conceived in an Erasure chat room taken over by MGMT fans. Stepdad's debut, Wildlife Pop, layers lysergic falsetto and garish synths into a flirtatious swirl of earnest hipster dance-party anthems.
