The San Francisco Symphony closes out Fourth of July weekend with a free afternoon concert in Stern Grove’s idyllic outdoor amphitheater. The San Francisco Symphony Concert is part of the Stern Grove Festival, an annual, family-friendly performance series that highlights the work of local arts organizations. The festival takes art outside conventional spaces making for a more tranquil, accessible, and egalitarian experience. Now in its 75th year, the festival celebrates dual anniversaries with a concert that features music from the orchestra’s centennial season. This year’s concert also marks the long-awaited return of Michael Tilson Thomas, who leads the Symphony through Copland’s Billy the Kid Ballet Suite and Beethoven’s Ninth -- selections with a powerful message of hope, courage, and forward thinking. Music with this much chutzpah memorializes the long-time partnership of these cultural institutions and solidifies a commitment to another season of history-making, as their legacies continue on together. What better way to pass on a love of the arts to the next generation?
