That a band called Codeine was a torchbearer of a subgenre called slowcore is one of those too-perfect combinations. Named after the prescription opiate, the New York-rooted group focused on creating solemn, painstaking, and workmanlike indie rock songs that grew increasingly upset and turbulent as their lengths rolled on. Recently, drummer Chris Brokaw affirmed, "Part of what [our music] was also trying to depict was a partial state of paralysis and things going by very slowly," which is a task Codeine succeeded at handsomely. Eighteen years after dissolving, the band's original lineup will play a few shows together in support of the Numero Group's re-releases of all its material.
