For the past two-and-a-half years, author Cheryl Strayed has been the voice behind “Dear Sugar,” a lyrical, heart-wrenching, and once anonymous advice column that appears on the San Francisco-based literary website The Rumpus. For those who have never read (and wept over, and vowed to change their lives because of) Sugar’s words, here’s an analogy for you: Strayed offers guidance the same way a gourmet chef might prepare a PB and J. That is to say, she does it with transcendent grace precisely because she really had no business doing it in the first place. Last Valentine’s Day, Strayed revealed to a packed room in San Francisco that she was the writer behind “Dear Sugar.” Tonight, she returns to celebrate the release of her new book, Tiny Beautiful Things, a collection of her best Sugar columns, plus a few that never made it online. Bring a hankie.
