The narration in 1967’s rollicking exploitation film Mondo Teeno: Teenage Rebellion is delivered with the seriousness of an STD public service announcement: "Across the country, every Friday and Saturday night, they gather in the temples to perform ceremonial dances to a rhythm that seems to reach back in time. It's called the beat." Originally shown as a drive-in double bill with Mondo Mod, Mondo Teeno is a bizarre “documentary report” offering footage of mods and rockers running amok in Brighton, teen riots on the Sunset Strip, a student revolt in Paris, and go-go dancing in Tokyo, as well as some sensational remarks on surfing, LSD, the Pill, hip-huggers, and beatnik happenings -- which leads, of course, to prostitution. Tonight, Johnny Legend -- the man behind Andy Kaufman’s My Breakfast with Blassie and a few choice sexploitation flicks (check out tomorrow’s screening) -- presents this movie along with a 1966 concert film very dear to his heart: The Big T.N.T. Show. Produced by Phil Spector as a sequel to the The T.A.M.I. Show, T.N.T. was filmed at Hollywood’s Moulin Rouge Theater with The Byrds, Bo Diddley, Ike and Tina Turner, Ray Charles, the Lovin’ Spoonful, and a slew of others (keep an eye out for Legend in the audience). Neither of these movies reveal the “truth about the ‘Now’ Generation” but they are irresistible fun.
