St. Lucia leader Jean-Philip Grobler has a worldly background, but not the one suggested by his project's moniker. Rather than being driven by Caribbean rhythms, the music made by Grobler — a South Africa native who stopped off in England before settling in Brooklyn — is full of gorgeous, triumphant electro-pop that brings to mind some of the genre's innovators (OMD, Pet Shop Boys) but is clever enough to avoid sounding like an '80s rehash. The strength of Grobler's songwriting is further proven when he brings his studio creations to the stage, where he and the band keep their majestic hooks intact while fueling a dance-rock party that doesn't subside until the final note. Also on this Popscene bill is French/Finnish duo the Dø, whose exotic indie rock is issued stateside by local label Six Degrees Records.
