Certain things are guaranteed when experimental New York trio The Psychic Paramount plays a rare show in S.F. this week. Since this instrumental band opened its latest album, II, amid an ear-splitting crescendo of noise, expect its live set to be skull-numbingly loud. With no vocals and fiery songs that develop out of improvised jams, also expect the level of musicianship to be high — this band's five-to-nine minute compositions at times clip along briskly like math rock, and sometimes erupt into bursts of soloing guitar and drum anarchy. Even its motorik grooves are subtly patterned. Lastly, expect creepy visuals: the members of The Psychic Paramount favor a simple setup of three bright lights and a hyperactive smoke machine, which should make for a fittingly haunting atmosphere when the band performs with Phil Manley Life Coach and Barn Owl.
