Live cinema is the next unpredictable step in the movie-going experience, if you haven’t been paying attention to the experimental filmmakers and po-mo VJs doing real-time sampling and multi-projector shows. Their aim is to provoke an audience reaction that’s qualitatively different than the overwhelmed passivity that so many big-budget filmmakers aspire to inflict. Presumably that’s part of the inspiration behind The Devil’s Carnival, a musical-theater-film-performance collaboration between director Darren Lynn Bousman (the second, third, and fourth Sawmovies, and Repo! The Genetic Opera) and writer Terrance Zdunich, who claims the juicy role of Lucifer for himself. The show is built around a one-hour film, replete with songs, comprising three allegories that invite us to contemplate the allure of the sorts of things whose price is an eternity or three in hell. The evening’s live component varies from city to city on this peripatetic coast-to-coast tour. We have a high degree of confidence that Bousman and Zdunich -- who will both be in the house -- have drafted talented friends and concocted devious surprises to satisfy the demanding and depraved desperadoes who keep the spirit of the Barbary Coast alive.
