Put Your Hands in the Air

We've seen Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding a couple times. We know what's involved in an Indian wedding. You've got your piles of marigold garlands and your attendees spontaneously breaking into song and dance. Maybe there's a steamy late-night tryst or two thrown in for good measure. Non Stop Bhangra puts a little romance in the air itself this month with "Crash an Indian Wedding Reception," the latest in its ongoing series of second-Saturday dance parties. Indian weddings are traditionally multi-day affairs, but Non Stop Bhangra is doing it all in one night with the most faux-nuptial fun to be found this side of Mumbai. Have one hand decorated with a celebratory (and temporary) henna tattoo while you munch on sweet snacks from New Delhi Restaurant with the other. If you and your friends aren't wedding-ready to perform the Bollywood dance sequence from the end of Slumdog Millionaire, then arrive early for a lesson in bhangra basics from the experts. Dholrhythms Dance Company provides further inspiration with a live performance before the resident Non Stop Bhangra DJs take over the decks with an addictive mix of electronica, drumming, and hip hop. The only thing missing from this wedding reception is the drama.
