What's sexier than than seeing gams peddling across the city on a bike? Seeing some sparks, sweat, and the precise passion it takes to build the bike itself. Bike craftsman Sean Walling calls his Petaluma shop Soulcraft, intent on preserving effortless utility and genius engineering over bells and whistles. Walling and a number of other devoted craftsmen will be in San Francisco Sunday afternoon for A Ruota Libera, showcasing cycles, tools, and the bad-ass bike-making process. Bike craftmanship has a long-standing history that goes beyond the relatively recent surge of cool kids making tall bikes -- last year filmmaker Michael Evans featured Walling in his short film From Steel: The Making of a Soulcraft, providing beautiful visual proof that this stuff is hella metal. On hand to serve up some grub will be punk rock pizza hero, Una Pizza Napoletana's owner Anthony Mangieri, who moved his legendary restaurant from Manhattan to the Bay Area in part because he's an outdoorsy cycling enthusiast. The event also features an exhibit by photographer Brian Vernor, live music, and a performance from San Francisco native and legendary Bones Brigade skater Tommy Guerrero.
