More About
The old tale of Faust — the doctor who strikes an agreement with Lucifer himself — has inspired innumerable creations, among them Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," Radiohead's "Faust Arp," the Keanu/Pacino vehicle The Devil's Advocate, and Marvel Comics hell-raiser Ghost Rider. With Faustian Echoes, black metal intellectuals Agalloch join the esteemed club. The elusive Portland, Ore., band's June-released 21-minute dirge plucks audio clips from Jan Svankmajer's 1994 film Faust and intertwines them with gnashing troll vocals and finely produced guitars that soar, twist, roar, and even seem to pause in contemplation. It's the kind of product you'd expect from a group so high-minded and choosy that its last full-length, 2010's Marrow of the Spirit, came four years after its previous record.
