The East Coast had the Dictators, and the West Coast had Redd Kross. While not as proto-punk as the former, Redd Kross and the Dictators were kindred spirits, sharing a love of American trash culture (B-movies, silly TV, cartoons) and ephemeral 1960s and '70s pop-rock. Formed in 1978 in the same L.A. 'burb as the Beach Boys, Redd Kross served up SoCal harmonies with punk-era sneer, wise-ass lyrics, crunching and terse guitars, and bubblegum-y melodic hooks. Never quite breaking into the college-rock sphere, Redd Kross went on hiatus in 1999, and returned in 2006. This week the band released Researching the Blues, its first new music in 15 years.
