When you get someone like Northwest indie figurehead Calvin Johnson to curate a compilation — as S.F.-based magazine The Believer did to accompany its annual music issue — you can expect something a little unusual. Johnson, a veteran of Olympia freak-pop outfit Beat Happening, lover of cassettes, and possessor of possibly the deepest male voice in the world, put together a varied mix of tape-only releases for this year's issue. The mag's release party will feature sets from Johnson and many of the independent artists he picked — none of whom you've heard of, and all of whom sound interesting.
