Charli XCX: Show Preview

Wednesday, Aug 15 2012

Music fans have long recognized the word "post-grunge," thanks to Nickelback, Seether, and friends. With the arrival of Charli XCX, "Disney Grunge" should be pushing its way into the lexicon, too. The 20-year-old Hertfordshire, U.K., singer, born Charlotte Aitchison, uses the term to describe her fashion sense, but her music itself touches on a decidedly non-Miley/Cobain vein. This is slinky, black-mascara-laden electro-pop for the Tumblr crowd — an aesthetic that would fit just right opening for Crystal Castles or a witch house outfit. "Nuclear Seasons," Charli XCX's most viewed YouTube clip, is a goth club after-party sex anthem just waiting to happen. Looking ahead, the rising talent will end up as likable or annoying depending on her next few moves; the fact that she's compiled several beloved songs into something called I LIKE BOYS WHO CRY ... THE MIXTAPE <3 is maybe not a good sign, but her good sense of humor and weird outfits definitely are.
