In its earliest days, punk rock was a genre almost entirely populated by assholes — artful, incendiary, culture-changing assholes, but assholes nonetheless. From his time in pub-rockers The 101ers in the early '70s, through the versatile Clash, up to his final days leading the Mescaleros, Joe Strummer maintained a feisty but still boyish presence — even when he displayed cynicism and anger, he did it for a good cause. Since his 2002 death, Bottom of the Hill has presented tributes to the songwriter, and this year's event involves performances from Irish rock outfit the Hooks, able-voiced power-pop guitarist Chris von Sneidern, and others, plus a raffle and prizes. Proceeds will benefit Strummerville, the music-focused charity established by Strummer's relatives and friends.
