Hieroglyphic Being: Show Preview

Chicago has a history of fostering the talents of outsider jazz musicians. The most famous of these is Sun Ra, but look closer and you'll find others. The late '80s begat a small school of producers bent on combining cosmic jazz with the metronomic rhythms of house. Hieroglyphic Being (aka Jamal Moss) is one such individual. An underground cult figure with ties to legendary DJ Ron Hardy, Moss began his career by providing Windy City clubs with raw industrial soundscapes. Today, he's the head of the prolific Mathematics record label, and he continues to promote a sound that might best be described as vaguely organized danceable noise. And while that might seem dated in the age of Skrillex, you only have to recall Moss' similarly otherworldly Chicago forebears to understand how far out he really is.
