One of the best ways to expend your artistic energy without the constraint of any rules, regulations, or protocols, is by making a zine. Whether you are a creative writer, cartoonist, or journalist, zines give you a platform to lay out your art exactly the way you want it and distribute it as you see fit. Known for the intimacy and the culture surrounding them, zines have a dedicated and strong following in San Francisco. A following that loves to throw festivals as an excuse to trade zines and check out each other's newest issues. That independent spirit and D.I.Y. attitude is sure to be present at San Francisco Zine Fest, am annual, two-day festival celebrating 150 different zine authors and illustrators, as well as small-press publishing houses like RE/Search Publications, Microcosm, and Tugboat Press. This year's Zine Fest also offers workshops and panels on topics like creating, marketing, sewing, and animation, and, of course, the latest and greatest zines the Bay Area has to offer. This year's featured guest zinester is Sarah Oleksyk, an L.A. writer and illustrator who has been featured in Best American Comics, and currently works for Cartoon Network's Regular Show. Whether you're a collector, fan, or novice, this fest is sure to provide much inspiration to draw from.
