The more you think about it, the more "Hot Snakes" makes an awfully perfect name for the San Diego band that first operated from 1999 to 2005 and continues to enjoy its 2011 reunion. "Hot" matches the act's instrumental angle — an agile-fingered, post-punk-by-way-of-garage style rich with volcanic, commanding guitars and drums whose pure speed and force could induce combustion. "Snakes," meanwhile, fits Rick Froberg's zigzag vocal style. The man barks, sputters, and sings with erratic fervor, and his sly lyrics are a most rewarding flavor of vague. (An excerpt from the absolutely perfect "Hi-Lites": "High treble! Hi-lites! Decor, decor: pink.") Unfortunately, Froberg expects the scrappy Snakes to disband again come 2013, so hit this party with haste.
