Yeasayer isn't the hot new band it was back in '07, when debut album All Hour Cymbals got critics hyperventilating about the latest in worldly art-pop. Nowadays the New York trio is as digital as everyone else; its new album, Fragrant World, teems with the sorts of beeps and booms and clicks and noise that would be nearly impossible to make without a laptop. Luckily it also contains some great songs: "Longevity," the second single and standout, is a slow, funky stomp with stomach-shuddering bass and slashes of bright synth; "Reagan's Skeleton" rides a skittering, uptempo groove punctuated by a yawning low-end. Lyrically, we get lots of earnestness: "Live in the moment/ Never count on longevity," etc. After three albums, Yeasayer feels more futuristic than ever, which is a good thing, even if not every experiment works out. No band can stay new; this one can at least sound like it.
