More About

People are always acting oddly in the Mission. But have you ever spotted a group of strangers all standing silently together, listening intently to the street sounds? It’s not an uncommon sight, thanks to the 24th Street Listening Project, a collaboration between local artists Lynn Marie Kirby and Alexis Petty that invites participants on a curated tour of the neighborhood’s uncelebrated noises. After a year of listening along a few blocks, Kirby and Petty are presenting the stories and sounds they’ve discovered in two parts: a walking tour and exhibition. The 5 p.m. walk ($20), titled Laguna Yellow, is sponsored by Elastic City, a network of unusual walking tours that blend poetry with tourism. Elastic City also conducts tours in New York (to rave reviews in the New York Times and the New Yorker), Berlin, Buenos Aires, Paris, and other destinations. Laguna Yellow explores the pigmentations of the Mission and culminates in the collective creation of a pigment poem. The subsequent exhibition (which starts at 7 p.m. and is free) showcases film, music, and stories from the neighborhood, as well as celebrates a book release from Kirby and Petty.
Wed., Sept. 19, 7 p.m., 2012
