Sizzle & Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

• After all these years, Blondie's Debbie Harry says she's still not used to seeing her face on T-shirts. In a conversation ahead of her Sept. 10 gig at the Warfield with Devo, Harry fondly remembered her days playing at S.F. punk club Mabuhay Gardens. Also, she laughed a lot.

The Beatles played their last concert ever at Candlestick Park on Aug. 29, 1966. On the 46th anniversary, we found bootlegged audio and listened to the whole 11-song show — which meant listening to a lot of screaming girls, none of whom knew this would be the last Beatles show ever.

Make fun of Avril Lavigne's engagement to Chad Kroeger all you want — that's the point. Celebrity gossip is like misanthropy without tears, a way for us all to take extreme positions on ethical issues without offending the people we really care about. So keep those snarky Tweets coming.

Fizzle

• The worst new song of the week award goes to No Doubt, for "Push and Shove." Guitarist Tony Kanal told Rolling Stone that the track was No Doubt's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is comical: There's a tempo change halfway through, some half-hearted ragga rhythms, and some of the most insipid lyrics this side of Karmin.

• Scientists say pop music has become more depressing over the last 40 years, so we double-checked by listening to the No. 1 song at the end of August at 10-year intervals. From our cursory review, they seem to be right — the slide from 1965's "I Got You Babe" to Mariah Carey's 2005 hit, "We Belong Together," is pretty grim.

• Local punk Doug "Sluggo" Cawley discovered earlier this year that his 4-year-old son, Blixa, has leukemia. The poor boy has to wear a catheter in his chest and take all kinds of medications. Luckily, Cawley's friends in the local music community have put together benefits for Blixa, and the kid is fighting his cancer like a true rock 'n' roller.
