Sizzle & Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

• The lineup for the 2012 annual Bridge School Benefit Concert includes Jack White, the Flaming Lips, Lucinda Williams, Foster the People, and (get this!) Guns N' Roses! Neil Young and Crazy Horse will also perform at the mostly acoustic two-day concert on Oct. 20-21.

• Lost in the Night journeyed to Oakland to check out the underground party Sick Sad World in what appeared to be an old rec center. Some of the performers were whacked out — like the guy singing opera over Merzbow-esque noise — but the headlining DJs kept the oddball crowd moving mightily.

• We caught a fantastic performance by The Jack DeJohnette Trio, featuring Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea, at Yoshi's S.F. You expect a lot from jazz greats, but the moments of supernatural connection, especially between Clarke (on bass) and DeJohnette (on drums) were amazing.

Fizzle

• We bid farewell to Oakland DJ Matthew Africa, who tragically died in a car accident while returning from a trip to Yosemite. Africa was 40, and a well-known figure in local hip-hop circles, having begun his career as a DJ at KALX. Africa died instantly in the Sept. 3 crash; his wife was hospitalized with critical injuries.

• The Worst New Song of the Week was released by Muse, the English trio that apparently isn't over its Olympic ostentation. If we'd wanted a weird combination of Queen, Skrillex, and U2 balladry, we'd get one of our DJ friends to do a hilarious mash-up, thanks.

• Not like the MTV Video Music Awards are ever free of commercial concern, but the product and song placements this year were pretty icky. One example: Mere nanoseconds after Alicia Keys finished her performance, we saw two ads playing her very same song — one for a sneaker, the other a credit card. Give us a moment to appreciate the artistry, will ya?
