New York already has one so it’s high time San Francisco started one too, an opportunity for participants to trot out their finest and show the world what we got. We are speaking not about a fashion week but about a gallery week, and S.F. finally inaugurates its very own this fall. Art Gallery Weekactually lasts slightly longer, 10 days to be exact, and features a whopping 36 spaces on both sides of the bay, two dozen of which are situated in our fair city. The focus on the first day was the galleries of Pacific Heights, Jackson Square, and North Beach, with further neighborhoods and special events (including a closing night party in Yerba Buena Gardens) to follow. Drop into Paul Thiebaud Gallery to see Eileen David’s brightly colored oil paintings depicting familiar local sights like Lefty O’Doul Bridge and the view from Potrero Hill, or walk gently around the Tony Feher sculptures that hang from the ceiling at Anthony Meier Fine Arts. Over on chic Jackson Street, Montgomery Gallery offers a taste of the California Decorative Style, with its impressionistic and mythical subject matter, in its exhibition of paintings by Arthur and Lucia Matthews. Whether the featured spaces are new to you or your regular stomping grounds, it’s a great excuse to hit up some of our best local art purveyors.
