More About

At least 15,000 people died in the March 2011 tsunami that devastated Japan. Vestiges of those lives — portraits of happy couples, kids playing baseball, families eating together — could be seen in scores of personal photos that emerged from collapsed houses and receding waves. Now, hundreds of these photos are brought together at Intersection for the Arts (925 Mission at Fifth St.). Each image is damaged by water, bacteria and other elements, a surreal veneer that, from a distance, makes the fragmented photos look like stylish ceramics. "(re)collection" is a tribute to the power of personal photos to connect us to anonymous lives, and deaths.
