Sizzle & Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

• Southern jammers My Morning Jacket let fans help suggest the setlist for its Saturday show at the Greek Theatre. Highlights like "Gideon" and "Victory Dance" stood as separate songs rather than long jams, but the band got long-winded on a few tunes, proving again why its live reputation is towering.

• Amid controversy over Amanda Palmer's request for musicians to play on her upcoming live shows without pay, local cellist (and Palmer collaborator) Unwoman explains why she's happy to perform for just beer: "People enjoy doing creative things, and will do them for free because we need the fulfillment that doing them brings."

SFJAZZ announced a stunning lineup for the first week of concerts in January at its new headquarters at 205 Franklin. Performers include legends like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Esperanza Spalding, Joshua Redman, and Joe Lovano. The S.F. nonprofit even got Bill Cosby to serve as master of ceremonies.

Fizzle

• Is Brooklynization killing local music scenes? That was the argument put forward by one disgruntled rocker in D.C. — but after thinking about the Bay Area scene for about two minutes, we're going to have to disagree. Sure, we sometimes lose local artists to NYC, but there are plent of vibrant goings-on here. It sure doesn't look dead to us.

Grimes' batshit clip for "Genesis" is probably the worst music video we've seen all year. The Canadian electro-pop singer claims to be a filmmaker, too, but this thing looks like what happens when intoxicated people at Burning Man decide to capture their outfits with a camera.

• Dear Chris Brown, you're not fooling anyone with that hideous new neck tattoo, which clearly resembles the face of Rihanna after you beat her. Stop insulting our intelligence and just own up to being the hateful abuser you are.
