Being socially ostracized truly sucks. A major upside? Outcasts often go on to write great songs about being outcasts. The title track of Saint Vitus' 1986 record, Born Too Late, is an exquisite example: Armed with a grinding pace and growling low frequencies, the Los Angeles doom metal pioneers' seven-minute track spiritually revamps The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes" for heavy metal misfits. "Every time I'm on the street, people laugh and point at me/ They talk about my length of hair/ And the out-of-date clothes I wear," Scott "Wino" Weinrich laments in a song that's as passionately frustrated as anything Black Flag made. This year's Lillie: F-65 — Saint Vitus' first album since 1995 — clings so tightly to the roots of the act's cavern-deep, proto-stoner-metal aesthetic that the '86-era bile might still feel fresh.
