Sizzle & Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

• At Slim's, folk singer William Elliott Whitmore alternately tore out our heart with his songwriting and made us laugh out loud with his banter. After performing the painful "Pine Box," the singer shouted "Fuck you, robot tuner!" at a piece of onstage gear. Somehow he made it feel like a natural transition.

• After the DJ trio's final S.F. show sold out in one minute, Swedish House Mafia added three more shows to its February S.F. stop — two of which sold out within the hour they were announced. It's gonna be one helluva sendoff at Bill Graham Civic.

• Ahead of his SFJAZZ concert, we spoke to the great saxophonist Sonny Rollins. "Jazz is a meritocracy," Rollins says of why he was able to play with royalty like Thelonius Monk at a young age. "You have to be good. You have to be talented. It's a gift."

Fizzle

The Gaslight Anthem played a rather workmanlike set at the Fox on Sunday. You get the sense that singer Brian Fallon really wants to be Springsteen — but unfortunately, he treated being onstage like a job, while even at 63, the Boss still treats it like a privilege.

• The worst new song of the week is Christina Aguilera's "Your Body," which somehow manages to be even tackier than "Dirrty," her previous low. We didn't think it was possible to write a mainstream pop song even less subtle than Rihanna's "S&M," but Aguilera for the win!

• Bad news for Oakland pop tart Kreayshawn: Her debut album sold a paltry 3,900 copies in its first week, landing at No. 103 on the Billboard 200. But what does her label expect when the album was released more than 14 months after her breakout single, "Gucci Gucci," hit YouTube?
