The Corner Store: A Weekday Lunch Treat

The Corner Store opened on Aug. 24 in the former Hukilau space; the old, dilapidated tiki bar has been renovated into a fresh new cafe with a saloon feel. And while it looks more like a place to get a fancy housemade soda or cocktail than a contender for a stellar sandwich — there's an old-fashioned soda fountain and long, creative cocktail list — you can actually get both here.

Lunch options are limited to three salads and three sandwiches. Instead of the burger garnished with bacon jam or the fried chicken sandwich with cabbage slaw, we opted for a fried green tomato sandwich and are still experiencing flavor dream flashbacks.

Its soft French roll has kissed the grill enough to soften the generous lump of burrata piled on top (a California nod to this traditionally Southern sandwich). Underneath, find cornmeal-breaded and fried tomatoes, which have no hint of grease. All the flavors mingle nicely with a slick of basil aioli. Pickled red onions bring the needed acid to the party, and avocado offers the nod to health. We ordered the sandwich to go, ate half before driving, and didn't eat the other half for almost 45 minutes. It had still miraculously avoided sogginess and tasted great.

This sandwich is not on the weekend brunch or dinner menus, though each offers many compelling dishes. Dinner brings Americana bistro meals like cornmeal-crusted trout and pasta with parmesan cream and tomato confit, while brunch has inventive treats like ricotta-blueberry pancakes and duck and grits.

Hopefully, the fried green tomato sandwich won't just remain a weekday treat.
