More About

Who says Halloween is no fun since they cancelled the Castro? This is still San Francisco, and this year Halloween (and the week leading up to it) has a veritable cornucopia of events to feed your fright fix. If you take your celebrating with a side of science, try Zombie Nightlife at Cal Academy on Oct. 25. San Franciscans with little ones can head to Spooktacular Hal-loween in Japantown (see Sunday). For a little boogie with your bogeyman (and probably the sexiest costumes all week) check out SF Indiefest’s Roller Disco Costume Party at CELLspace on Oct. 26 (sfindie.virb.com) or Mega Halloween Haunted Mansion on Oct. 27 (megahalloweensf.com). Even with Halloween itself falling on hump day, the dedicated trick-or-treater — and the chronically underemployed — won’t be hurting for activities today and tonight. Art showcasing the sinister, the creepy, and all things that go bump in the night is on display at ARC Gallery’s “Masquerade” exhibition (arc-sf.com) and Velvet Da Vinci’s “Mirror-Mirror” (velvetdavinci.com). The Roxie screens movies of grindhouse gore and blood-sucking vampires with a double feature of Near Dark and From Dusk Till Dawn (roxie.com); or if you prefer to be frightened in the flesh, a musical adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven is playing the Victoria Theater (victoriatheatre.org). To hit the clubs in a fancy costume you can go upmarket at 1015 Folsom at the Mad Hatter’s Ball with Flosstradamus and An-te-nae, or opt for the dark circus vibe at the All Hallow’s Eve Extravaganza in the newly renovated DNA Lounge, with Pop-scene DJs and performances from Vau de Vire Society. And for all those people who prefer to pee their pants from laugh-ing rather than fright, we recommend the Romane Event Comedy Show, with local faves Caitlin Gill, Will Durst, Samson Koletkar, and more.
