Posters give us insight to a very distinct way of life. In the curious mix of composition, color, and typography, we are able to transcend social class, history, artistic temperaments, political views, and even geography. These funny art baubles have generations of reach and extend into almost every industry — film, transportation, travel, graphic design, advertising, and so on. This weekend, the world’s oldest and largest sale of original, vintage posters returns to the Bay Area. The 2012 San Francisco International Vintage Poster Fair exhibits over 10,000 print pieces dating from the 1890s through the 1980s. Dealers from across the globe display their outstanding collections with new acquisitions of art deco, modernist, art nou-veau, and Victorian styles. All posters at the fair have been vetted for authenticity by the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association. The feature exhibit, “Seven Deadly Sins,” showcases the vices we all know and love in poster form. The fair invites students, collectors, and enthusiasts alike to marvel in the quirky aesthetic of a unique and beautifully preserved world. Celebrate the creativity and craftsmanship of bygone eras and, maybe, bring a slice back to your own space.
