Hug Monsters: The Anti-Semitic Elmo Has Some Ugly Pals
It could be the first time in history that a costumed street performer has been criticized for doing something worse than just being a costumed street performer. A guy dressed as Elmo has been stalking Fisherman's Wharf and a San Francisco park, hugging children and launching into a high-volume, obscenity-filled kvetch about Jews and other minorities. The man beneath the Elmo head, Adam Sandler (not that one), was arrested in New York in September for the same kind of mishegas. Officer Albie Esparza of the San Francisco Police Department says police "admonished" Sandler but couldn't arrest him for any particular offense. (The First Amendment protects even the furriest of us.) But the whole mess proves it's never too early to lose faith in beloved childhood icons. Here, a list of other friends to beware:
