The San Francisco Opera celebrates its 90th season with a jam-packed, community event. The Opera Community Open House is an insider glimpse into the world of opera and stage production. A host of activities guide attendees through the various stages of an opera, from inception to performance. Guests are invited to take part in onstage technical workshops, which include demonstrations on set-building, lighting techniques, prop-making, and more. A fun scavenger hunt and costume displays peppered throughout provide an opportunity to explore the form and function of this historic building. Live musical performances during the event showcase the company’s fall season program, which includes Wagner’s Lohengrin and Puccini’s Tosca (the first piece performed at War Memorial Opera House 80 years ago). The open house also presents two screenings of Carmen for Families — The Movie!, a casual introduction to opera fit for the next generation of concert-goers. The Open House is free, but attendees who register early and online are entered into a drawing for four tickets to S.F. Opera’s 2013 performance of The Secret Garden. Come see why opera is an energized and ageless art form and discover the magic of this remarkable company.
