In the West, yoga refers to an hour-long class that usually starts with downward dog, but the term, coming from a Sanskrit word meaning “yoke” — and more prosaically, “unite” or “put to use” — refers to any discipline used to reach an admirable goal. It might seem incongruous to channel consumerism into yoga but there are those who would argue that, since it is our only true devotion, bringing consciousness and conscience to the marketplace should be part of the Western path. Over the last 10 years the Green Festival has paved the way, offering global visionaries, activists, researches, teachers, and inventors a platform and a meeting place to share ideas, lead workshops, and peddle wares. This year, Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman shares the main stage with food revolutionary John Robbins, and environmental journalist and global guardian Bill McKibben. But the real action is usually on the smaller stages where community groups, prophetic visionaries, and D.I.Y. entrepreneurs share what they know about hacking for social good, creating pharmacies in your own backyard, avoiding plastic, and birthing babies. This year offers panels on everything from the greening of bling (redefining hip hop) to the creation of sharing economies, but if doom and gloom are your forte, today’s lecture by John Perkins, the controversial author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, should hit the spot.
