For the past decade, the Devil Makes Three has been cranking out the kind of dirty string-band songs American roots-music fans crave. With a bare-bones sound — just vocals, guitars, banjo, and upright bass — this trio of road warriors has brought its juke-joint blues, crossroads rags, and back-porch folk to all corners of the country. Once based in Santa Cruz, the group played in San Francisco all the time, where it would get typically too-hip-to-move concert-goers on their feet, stomping and chanting to hedonistic anthems like "Old Number 7" and "Aces and Twos." Much like that old-time religion, the band has developed a cult following whose devotion has catapulted it to the Fillmore this week for its biggest local show to date.
