Have you ever considered eating breakfast with your father or getting a haircut as symbols of deep existential doom? In the gloomy video for "Wet Blanket" — a track off METZ's freshly issued self-titled debut album — those ordinary moments become examinations of the self, especially when the visuals are paired with the band's chainsaw-like noise-punk/post-hardcore. Fundamentally, the Toronto trio doesn't offer a new twist on the cranky, happy-to-be-hateful rock rooted in the Jesus Lizard and Big Black, but METZ's feedback-throttled clatter continuously pumps enough blood to make its vitriol thrilling and worthwhile. In a recent interview, guitarist/vocalist Alex Edkins said that being onstage during the havoc is "like getting knocked out for a minute, and when you wake up, your guitar is broken and you're covered in sweat" — an extra selling point if you need it.
