Rupa and the April Fishes is one of those Bay Area groups that's been around for years, and never quite gotten its due. But that may be about to change: Build, the newest album by working physician Rupa Marya and her band, shows off global influences in some of their most appealing songs yet. Even though it's mostly sung in English — a first for this crew — we still get lots of international flavor: there's the French reggae of "Sur La Route," hints of Spanish on "No Olvidado," and a two-tone cover of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton" — with switched-up lyrics that mention Oscar Grant. Celebrating the working classes the world over, Build is just the kind of conscientious statement you'd expect to come out of the Bay Area.
