Quite a few claim the title of "Godfather of House," but nobody disputes Juan Atkins' stature as the man who invented Detroit techno. Working first as Cybotron and later as Model 500, he built the foundations for a genre that has since become a worldwide phenomenon. Yet it was really the latter moniker that would solidify his position in it, with Afro-futuristic tracks like "Nightdrive (Thru Babylon)" and "Vessels in Distress" interpreting the alienation of post-Fordist Detroit through a hybrid vehicle of rhythm and science fiction. And while that might seem like history, the project has recently resurfaced with killer tracks like "Control," which fuses electronic funk with digital totalitarianism. This week Model 500 performs as a live band with Atkins joined on stage by fellow Detroiters Mad Mike Banks, DJ Skurge, and Mark Taylor.
