Go Nuts

Christmas is nigh! Before the whirlwind begins, take a moment to enjoy a staple of the holiday season: a special performance of The Nutcracker by the Westlake School for the Performing Arts and Artists in Motion. After the decorated Christmas tree has been unveiled and the house is quiet with sleep, Clara returns to check on her present, only to find that her beloved Nutcracker has become a grown man. Oh, and a ton of mice and gingerbread soldiers have decided to stage their battle in her living room. With a slipper as her weapon of choice, Clara distracts the Mouse King long enough for the Nutcracker to stab him to death. Nothing ushers in a toy-to-prince transformation like murder, and boy is he handsome. The prince takes Clara for a moonlight stroll in the pine forest where snowflakes dance around them. You'd think he'd done enough to seal the deal already, but in the beginning of Act II they are gliding along in a nutshell pulled by dolphins hurrying them to the land of Sweets. Can't make tonight's performance? Have no fear — the City Ballet School offers its rendition starting Dec. 6.
Sat., Dec. 1, 6 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 2, 2 p.m.; Mon., Dec. 3, 10:30 a.m., 2012
