More About

The days are shorter, the nights are darker, and even those of us in temperate climes feel a natural need to hunker own, share food, and sing songs to keep the gloom at bay. Western tradition sensibly provides moments of relief in the deepest fold of winter, but they are too often swallowed up in consumer tide or familial quagmire. That’s why we need Kitka’s Wintersongs. Over the years, this highly praised vocal ensemble has traveled abroad, gathering folk songs from the rural villages of Eastern Europe. This year, the ladies stayed closer to home, plumbing family traditions of the many people who, over the last three decades, have become their global village. Nowadays, the term for this is crowdsourcing. Once upon a time, it was just what people did. However you see it, the harvest was plentiful. This year’s boreal program features songs from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and pagan perspectives, rising from the Balkans to Belarus. They are songs of merriment, mourning, gift-giving, loss, and latkes.
