Terry Baum of the Crackpot Crones isn’t against holiday shows in theory, though “as a lesbian, a feminist, and a political activist,” she says, “I have always felt that there wasn’t enough in the holiday season that reflected me and my life.” So she took matters into her own hands with Crones for the Holidays, which she describes as “an alternative for people who don’t want to see The Nutcracker or A Christmas Carol.” Written and performed with her longtime collaborator Carolyn Myers, the show is part sketch comedy, part improv, and all irreverence — from a Virgin Mary who says she got “knocked up by Gabriel” and who dances with Pussy Riot to a song about the end of the Mayan calendar, with music by the legendary Scrumbly Koldewyn. For Baum, subversion is particularly important “at a time of year when there’s so much sanctimoniousness.” Though Baum and Myers have performed together for decades, this show, which is directed by Joan Mankin and co-directed by Bobbi Ausubel, is their first in San Francisco as the Crackpot Crones, a term Baum defines as “warped old feminists.” Take that, Ebenezer Scrooge.
