When most San Franciscans think of sightseeing tours, they roll their eyes with thoughts of red double-decker buses, those ubiquitous yellow GoCars, and rows of helmeted tourists on Segways. But thanks to high gas prices and a bad economy, recent years have seen a trend toward “staycationing,” and several companies have popped up to help us get off the beaten path right here at home. Tonight, Discovery Street Tours shows us why it’s one of the best with The Science of (Holiday) Light. A Discovery tour is all about exploring the science of everyday life and interacting with the landscape. Past tours have explored the science behind bread, wine, cheese, and even how we walk. Expect tonight’s 90-minute tour to include experiments with mixing color and animation, as well as the Mission District’s best views, hidden stairways, and holiday displays. With activities like this right outside the front steps, who needs to leave town?
Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m.; Fridays, Sundays, 6:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 22, 6:30 p.m.; Mon., Dec. 24, 6:30 p.m.; Tue., Dec. 25, 6:30 p.m. Starts: Dec. 12. Continues through Dec. 30, 2012
