History isn’t boring, but far too often, the person telling it is. Forget dense books about politicians that all but ensure a midday nap. Turn off the History Channel’s neverending World War II coverage. In fact, get up off the couch and walk out the front door, because The Whole Shebang tour of San Francisco is many things, but none of them are boring. "Part history lesson, part game show, and all fun," the tour starts in tony Nob Hill before heading over to the posh Union Square. Both areas played an early role in shaping San Francisco, as did the next stop, which just happens to be the city’s oldest neighborhood: Chinatown. It isn’t the only one in America, but it is the biggest, and there are plenty of surprising sights, interesting sounds, and smells -- good and bad -- to take in. Duck into the fortune cookie factory for a sweet taste of history, which has more to do with the Gold Rush than you might think. If the Italian community is the heart of North Beach, then the Beats are its soul, and they both call it home. The tour ends here, but we think you’ll spend some time revisiting a few stops along the way, including City Lights for books. Whether you’ve still got visitors in town or you’re trying to improve yourself in 2013, a comedic, historic walking tour is a good place to start.
