The Embarcadero has seen a fair bit of controversy in recent years. There were tense negotiations over how much leeway the city would give the America’s Cup race, a downright nasty political fight over the 8 Washington project, and now some residents are objecting to development plans for a new Golden State Warriors arena. But the waterfront will be gaining one tenant this year that we’re pretty sure everyone will love, and that’s the Exploratorium. Founded by professor, high school teacher, and occasional cattle rancher Frank Oppenheimer, the Exploratorium has been educating and fascinating the public with its “library of experiments,” and hands-on science learning since 1969. Its new home will feature nine acres of space on Piers 15 and 17, and will be much more accessible by public transit than their current location. We are positively delighted, but there is one downside -- the new campus won’t open until the spring of 2013, and today is the Exploratorium’s last day at the Palace of Fine Arts. So grab the kids (or just yourself) and come crawl through the Tactile Dome, experiment with the Marble Machines, or take a self-guided Gross-Out Walk, before it closes for the big move.
